Happy Memorial Day

“Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident” (Psalm 27:3 ESV).

“Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle” (Psalm 144:1 ESV).

Aren’t the Psalms such a great source of comfort? I know during my personal quiet times, and “selah” moments (when I meditate on the Word of God), I often find myself taking verses like these and applying them to my own life in abstract ways. If my “battle” is with sickness, I dwell on the fact that God has given me victory against all disease through the Name of Jesus. Or if I am warring against severe anxiety, I remember God is my “fortress,” and in Him I am kept safe from fear. Indeed the war-like imagery David uses in his psalms draw many parallels to our own daily struggles (like debt, sickness, depression, fear, etc.). But on days like today, it is important to remember the other side of the coin.

While David did cry out to God during times of emotional distress, his lines like “though war rise against me,” and “who trains my hands for war,” took on an incredibly real interpretation as well. David literally knew what it was like to lead armies and come face-to-face with taunting enemies, sword in hand. David knew what it was like to have his life threatened on a day-to-day basis. But for David, it was about more than defending his own honor. No, his motivation for defending Israel was a deep devotion to God, and a passionate heart for his country’s safety.

And today in the United States of America, we honor the hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens who, like David, sacrifice their comfort for ours; the ones who protect our lives by risking theirs, and guard our borders so we might dwell safely therein. Let’s give the members and families of the United States Armed Forces a BIG “thank you”! Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed, and we deeply appreciate everything you do.

Lord, we pray for our military today, and ask You continue granting them peace and comfort. Make them strong and courageous as they face adversity, and reveal to every single individual involved that You are their Fortress and their Deliverer.

Post your prayers and encouraging words for our military below! Let’s gather together and create a culture of honor on our facebook page today! If you have a loved one in service presently, post a prayer request, and we will stand in agreement for their safety and peace as they serve.

Happy Memorial Day, everyone!
